The Freedom Tale by Nanyanika Chowdhury

Updated: Aug 24, 2019

A poem by Triple A author, Nayanika Singha Chowdhury. The Freedom Tale is about a Syrian girl of fifteen who was taken in a all-women camp to serve as a slave and was molested several times. There was this group of ten women which formed at the camp that tried to raise the lost confidence of the others and planned to escape the camp. They were irresistible and their power was contagious. The community craved for freedom and their bonding helped them to break the shackles. They infused strength in the teenager and at the end she turned like them. She was irresistible. -

The walls they build, the family they separated,

It was the girl's birthday but everything was so dismayed.

Born and brought up as a Syrian, she was always surrounded by her dears,

For the first time she had to rely on strangers.

Strange is the way she was treated, worst was the way she was cared,

Dying every single day in the camp

Her life was left to damp.

Not many had mercy on the cruelties done to women,

Oppressed, molested were they left in their den.

Not until a group of ten women decided,

To lift up the devastated.

They held the hands of all those who had lost their zeal,

And made sure they had the power to heal.

For days the community formed, for months they were each other's cushion,

"No walls can separate humanity" is what they had proven.

They grew together, they nurtured each other,

From ten-fifty every one was there for the other.

They took up the girl, they knew she was vulnerable.

In the world of war, can a fifteen year old be ever mentally stable?

With hands on their bosom they all wanted freedom,

But this dream looked like a far fetched kingdom.

It gave her strength, it helped her dream,

She had again started to look for the cream.

The final day came, they were ready to act,

Nothing could surpass to what they thought apt.

In the dark of the night, the women came out,

Choking a few guards, leaving all in doubt.

That's how the women escaped, the dreary tentacles of the evil that was laid,

Their bonding led them to freedom,

It's your choice to be subjugated or to live in a dream kingdom.
